Posted: Mon Feb 04, 2008 1:45 pm Post subject: Boycott ebay Feb. 18th - 25th
Quote
There has been a lot of noise going around about an eBay Boycott Feb. 18th - 25th. Sellers that survived the all the other eBay fee increases will remember that there was a boycott every time.
I will be supporting the ebay boycott again because we need to show them all the angry sellers out there. Maybe if it weren’t for the past boycotts, ebay forum posts, blogs, and anti-ebay sites ebay would be raising fees every year instead of every couple. eBay did hear us on their 2005 fee increase when they raised store fees to $15 a month. After a lot of protest they gave all storeowners a free month. If you add up all the ebay stores that is a HUGE one time total savings for all storeowners.
This boycott will give sellers one week off ebay in which I encourage them to take the time to try out all the alternative auction sites available or start there own ecommerce store. Things are only going to get worse on ebay so this would be a good time to seek alternatives.
Lets keep a close eye on the auction site count and make their listings drop during the boycott.
*Do we have any graphic artists here that can make and share any anti-ebay or boycott images.

That is the post that started it all this time around and IMO it is the ultimate in pot stirring. I am not sure what was edited but to edit a post 5 days after the fact without a follow up to notify of that change in the thread IMO is an adaptation to greed. What I mean is, look at that thread, well over 100 pages now and something was changed 5 days into it that most people don't know about, I don't know what was changed do you?
I have a big problem with the boycott to begin with but what most people don't realize is the boycott does more damage than eBay could ever do in a weeks time to people participating. How? How many of you have heard the stories about people boycotting for the week even though they need eBay to pay medical bills and food? I have and why do people participate if that is the case? Because of irrational people inflicting there views upon people oblivious to the outside of eBay world. It's not just alternatives, it's everyone including independent website owners. WHAT WORKS FOR YOU DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK FOR THE NEXT PERSON AND WHAT WORKS FOR ALTERNATIVES DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK FOR THE NEXT PERSON. Sorry for yelling but everyone needs to remember that. More so you have sites like PSU and alternatives adding fuel to the fire. I don't remember PSU being around for the early boycotts. Hey great 05 PSU started in protest of eBay. So what, who cares? PSU is nothing more than GROUP THINK!!!! If you don't agree with the powers that be you will be run over like a dead raccoon.
What right do people from alternatives have to support in protest of eBay this time around? I see it as adding fuel to the fire while the people who need the money most are trapped in a closet. Live and learn people, I don't have the answers and neither do you. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I see all sides pulling these people apart. Sorry if you don't think so but IMO PSU never had the right to get involved with this boycott. Let them figure out what they need to do for there own business and carry on with your own business plan. Besides, all the information is out there for anyone who wishes to read it, Google what you want to know and you will get it.
Free speach? Yep we all have it and we need to use it whenever we can but it should never be a business plan other than your own. What is the purpose behind the PSU boycott of eBay at this point? I tell ya what MO (my opinion) may differ from yours but I see it as GREED that is far worse that eBay. The alternatives as well have fueled it because that is where they market, PSU.
Rules to live by:
#1 if you are making money at a site do so.
#2 if you are losing money at a site adapt your business or move on.
The above rules apply to all sites including eBay.
end of rant.

Joe - I am short on time - gotta go get groceries and mail some items. I did want to say tho that the PSU post that you quote - I agree with ya. My biggest concern of recent about PSU and this is before the boycott stuff....is the 'opinions' of those in charge.
I'm 100% OK that moderators and Owners contribute, and share. BUT....I have a huge concern that if not stated properly, exactly what 'is' there happens.
I see way too many folks 'there' who are making decisions with their emotions out-front vs. any brain or business sense. I guess, for me, I always assume those selling on ebaY had business sense. I'm learning that in many, many cases - these folks have been successful in spite of any business sense.
You have people like I - intelligent and knowing quickly that the ebaY model by itself would not net much profit due to the str for my stuff and my average selling price. Those, like I - numpty in every sense of the way - html, css, other sites, etc. - but with business sense will 'get it' and move on.
Then you have people who have quietly gone and made their business work. It may be totally ebaY, a mix with ebaY or their own site - dunno and doesn't matter. They saw the 'future' and reacted.
Then you have this whole group that has no business sense, never had to market, does not know computers, etc. - and they are just pizzed off at the world! This is the group that nobody can/will reach.
Those who need the income and join the boycott - what can you say? Sad, but we all know there are always followers who struggle to take care of business first.
I agree with you Carol - it's hard to watch. I've been over there and I do see a few (small few) light bulbs today. That gives me a bit of hope!!!

Group think hard at work. Hence the banning of DeeCan. Conform for the better good or you are out on your ass.

You nailed it Erin!
I found this posted on the eBay boards and to me, it said it all. I posted it at PSU, but it fell on deaf ears:
These threads have proven one thing for sure: eBay is so powerful a marketing force that it can take people with little or no business acumen and allow them to sell their wares online. Once those same people do not have eBay, they'll find that they're not left with much.
These people are the ones we're seeing right now at PSU. THEY think they do understand business and how to run one. Sadly most don't and they are on that train Carol was talking about headed for disaster. Unfortunately, who will they blame in the end? eBay or the Alternative sites. Most never will 'get' that the main problem lies with them.

Deb ---- of course in their minds, if they can have success on ebaY, they are a 'success'. I do not think 1/2 of these folks understand what has been discussed here....ebaY brings buyers; ebaY brings traffic.
If anybody desires to be ebay-free or ebay-independent, they must fill that equation. I do believe they will blame everyone else. That's because they don't get it.
I also see many not linking any place. What that says to me is they came to PSU to B-M-W cuz they can't at ebaY. I wish someone would tell them to $hit or get off the pot (that's what my g-pa used to say....)

Can you say Dumb and Dumber?
The boycott shows all signs of being a complete failure, so these people are talking about extending it.
WTF???
PSUnite has already started a new poll:

OK so get mad at Ebay, have a drink and calm down. Or move on.
Well I saw this post on PSU and my jaw hit the floor.

Unemployment, welfare, a tin cup on the street corner, anything is better than dumping my integrity and crawling back to ebay to lick their boots! Strike on! Find me at OLA, ecrater, or maybe in line at the foodbank!
That is the most irresponsible thing I have seen so far, and there have been many idiotic things posted.
Ebay doesn't care if you boycott, but if it is a choice to feed your family, ummm either stay with ebay or get a job.

I was over reading the ebay boards the other night and was absolutely amazed at the personal attacks that were being made at sellers. Even threats.
Lets face it sellers could never sell if buyers weren't there to buy.

I started to pick this post apart and realized it wasn't worth the effort because the entire post is laughable. See link.

Joe.....which post in particular? I see 'some' that are still angry and out to get ebaY. I see others who 'get it' and are thinking differently. But - Oprah is now going to be contacted.
I love Oprah!!

These sellers that have just fell off the eBay turnip truck are way angrier than I remember being. Most of won't be able to function without eBay. It will be interesting to see which ones are still around PSU in a month or so.

Yah, talk about angry !!
Yesterday I had a "round and round" with a "orylazoff " about a college "harvesting site". He sees conspiracies EVERYWHERE !! From the sounds of all his posts anywhere on PSU, this guy hasn't done anything FOR himself yet. He's just continually eBay bashing.
So much wasted time and energy. Not to mention probably an ulcer building up.
I don't like to "spout scripture" on these boards, but there are 2 verses in Proverbs that seem so pertenant right now. Proverbs 14:29,30 - " 29 He that is slow to anger is abundant in descernment, but one that is impatient is exalting foolishness. 30 A calm heart is the life of the fleshly organism, but jelousy is rottenness to the bones."
Even the medical profession has acknowledged that anger and jelousy are detrimental to your health. These newbie eBay refugees need to get on with their life. All this "bitching and moaning" isn't getting them anywhere.
