Everything Happens for a Reason

« on: November 07, 2007, 09:08:03 AM »

I need to install SSL on my cart and thought to share the adventure with everyone.  Now I'm not the one to be asking questions, however any helpful information that I find along the way I will be happy to share and hope that anyone who can help we would appreciate hearing from you.

I did a basis search and came up with this company

http://www.digicert.com/s...tificate-installation.htm

I recognized the name because someone had already mentioned to me that they were a good company to deal with.  So here is some information that might be helpful:

SSL Certificate Installation Instructions

How to install your SSL Digital Certificate

SSL Certificates will be available for download when validation and processing are complete. (The ssl certificate itself is a text file; it is encrypted data that your web server will be able to understand when installed as a digital certificate.)

Before you begin the installation, make a back-up of your certificate that you can keep in a safe place. This makes re-securing your server much easier if your server crashes.

In addition to your SSL certificate will be two more certificates to download. These are known as intermediate certificates, and are required so that browsers can know to trust your SSL certificate. Registered Authorities like DigiCert must provide a known root certificate before their SSL certificate will be trusted by SSL-enabled applications.

Installation is straightforward, but varies for different web server applications. Specific instructions for the most common web servers are available on your left. (need to go to the link)

Have you started to do this yet?

On my www.baysbeauty.com site I have this:  http://www.rapidssl.com/index_ssl.htm however I didn't download it.  Ginger did it for me.  I guess I need to ask if this is something that we add to our site or do we add this to the host?  I am interested in having my www.baysbeautygraphicdesigns.com site with a SSL as well and if it is something I can do then that would be great.

I have not started yet, but I would like to as soon as I find time.  First thing I plan to do is get in touch with my host and find out what they have to offer and what needs to be done.

That is what I did also, I contacted my host and she did all the work for me and I just paid for the SSL and this was added to my one site but I have the other site that does not have SSL.  I wonder if you have SSL on one site if it could be also on your other site or if you need to purchase a new one.  Google had me put my site on a dedicated server.

It is best if you can get the host to install the SSL.  My host actually prefers to do it himself.

Google does require a dedicated IP address.  IF the two sites are on the same account/dedicated IP, then they can share the SSL certificate.

If they are different accounts with different IPs you will have to get another SSL.

Thank You!  I'm going to run over there and check this out right now.  I thought that Quilt was going to have to teach me something!   rah rah

There is one other thing that needs to been accomplished as well, however at the moment I can not remember what it was.

I gotta love you!

First I would talk to my host and go from there.  I just contacted my host and I'm waiting an answer and once I hear something I will bring it to you on what I'm to do.  I hope this helps us.

I have contacted my host as well and there are a variety of options available regarding the certificates.  From my understanding and the help of some terrific people I was informed that before  purchasing an ssl certificate you need to have a dedicated (static) IP address for each domain name.

You also need to generate a CSR in your control panel.

I'm learning and am confident this will all work out

Yep, my host installed everything for me and my SSL is on a dedicated server because that is the only way GoogleCheckout would let me have GoogleCheckout on my site.  Mine was only about $12.00 or so.  I was going to follow your lead and see if I could do my other site but it seems that my host is going to just do this for me, but I do want others to read your info incase they are wanting to go in this direction which I highly recommend.  I and others have noticed that my site is locked and you do see the https in my url which makes me happy.  I love it!!!!  I am high tech now!   hysterical hysterical hysterical

Ok so there is obviously something in my DNA that requires me to do everything the hard way

My host does not do it for you and the site where I purchased my domains is very slow.  Anyhow.........I'm gonna do it and for those of you following this post it can be done.  Currently I am in the process of getting my dedicated IP address and my certs.  At the moment I am waiting for confirmation and will hopefully finalize everything.  We shall see shortly.  Stay tuned!

I wish you much deserved Good Luck Girlfriend.  You do sound like you are learning lots if that means anything.

I guess I'm blessed as my sites are being hosted by Ginger at ECA and she takes care of everything for me.  I just thought that
I would have to take care of my graphic site but come to find out Ginger is doing this for me.  I guess that is what I get for not talking to her first.     I'm so blessed to have her in my life!

Please let us know how it goes.
