hysterical hysterical hysterical hysterical Hey ... I gotta vegie tail for sale in my PH store!!!!

In seriousness, me too - love vegies!  I can't wait for this thread as Carol knows her stuff.  When we discussed the 'garden' and the gardening adventures at our other forum, it was fun for me to 'hear' how the vegies were progressing in diff. parts of the country.

I killed my poor little seedlings....and had to go out and 'buy' starters that year, but I'm game again to try next year!  This year, we had tomatoes, green peppers and some hot pepper that I could NOT get near....

I wanna grow celery - anybody done that?

I use to have a garden on the side of my house until the deer ventured in and ate all my tomatoes.
I had a beautiful garden at my old house. It was back when Boy #3 was starting to eating baby food and I made all his food myself.
Back in the day!

We have bunnies, ground squirrels and our dog that we must plant for and share with....

My dog is the only 4 legged dog I've ever seen that prefers vegies to meat.  I was stir-frying chicken the other day, and a chunk flew out onto the floor.  I hollered for my dog, who came out and sniffed it and walked away.

However, if I get an onion out, he hears the onion paper from across the house, and flies into the kitchen like it's a meat bone or something!! He lives for carrots also - and he knows when I'm cutting vegies --- even from outside!!  hysterical hysterical

Wes,

Thanks for getting this started.

I remember the tomato story too -- Hubby went out and bought some plants so you wouldn't know right away, or something like that.

We haven't had bunny problems, but do have deer problems. The last maybe 5 years, I haven't been able to harvest any of our great lettuce without the deer nibbling on it first. Considering I try to grow it for market, I've lost thousands of dollars worth of lettuce to those giant flea bags (or maybe I should call them tick bags with the Lime disease problem here)

An electric fence like is used for horses now days seems to work pretty well for the deer and somewhat for the racoons. The racoons and crows are watermelon eaters. Real PITBs at times.  :bye7:

- can't wait. Actually late winter when I get things started in the greenhouses.

I still don't even know what I did to kill them little babies - perhaps I needed to talk nicer to them..... I was sweet-talking them little babies and they were so cute and then .... thud.... they fell over!!!  wave

Actually, I think I snuck out and bought them as my hubbie said I'd never be successful.  Imagine his surprise when he left town for work and there were itty-bitty twiggy plants.  Upon return, there were very healthy seedlings.... love grin

I fibbed for the whole season and told him at the end!!  hysterical

I still have bloomed flowers on my deck in a pot.  The day I planted them I apoligized knowing their lives would be short lived and here it is almost 8 months later and they look great.  I wish I could plant a money tree

Well I have to admit my tomatoes were terrible this year. We had such dry weather in June and July that the plants barely grew during that time. Then Aug about drowned them. Literaly. 9 inches of rain. A few varieties did OK, but most of them surcomed to disease due to all the water.

But some of our other plants did fantastic. Winter squash were OK. Watermelons went crazy. Hot peppers produced like mad.

We have some cabbage that was planted in mid May sometime. We picked the main heads mostly during July. Then we started picking the smaller secondary heads. Around the end of Aug, those were getting bad from all the rain and I thought that's fine, we did great with these plants. Then the weather evened out and they started producing more small heads. We are STILL picking mini heads from many of those same plants.

We call them "granny" heads as they are only about softball size or sometimes smaller. But they make a nice meal for a 1 person in a household. Most of them don't want a 10lb head of cabbage. We're filling a neglected market. At 3 or 4 / $1 we won't get rich, but it's nothing to sneeze at either.

Carol - that's super cool!  If I had 'covered' my tomatoes when it was getting cold those 2 nights, I would prolly still be getting some off it!

I love cabbage too!  And - our hot peppers are still producing...I couldn't kill 'that' thing if I wanted to!!  sniff
