This is just a suggestion, however I did notice a rather large improvement in my organic search results for my website. What I have found is that the bots and spiders seem to love linked text on my websites homepage. They seem to crawl my site more often and for a longer period of time AKA a deep crawl once I linked the text on my homepage.

See example below or to see the links work go to www.nybikerapparel.com:

Using this technique allows you to target specific pages and or keywords, thus increasing your organic search results through the use of additional meta tags (keywords) above and beyond the standard 250 character limit that most spiders or bots recognize. It will also enhance, through double exposure the meta tags you already have placed on your site.

Excellent Tip!

There are many ways to incorporate text into your layout too.  My driftwood site is another good example.  This site started showing up on pages one and two of Google for our main keywords within 10 days of submitting it to the search engines.

This is what my visitors see:

This is what the Search Engine Spiders see:

And this is a sample of all the links the Spiders see:

The Spiders will follow each one of those links and it will encourage them to do a deep crawl on your website.

SEO experts will all agree on one point.  Descriptive text on your homepage is crucial to getting good placement in the search engines AND in getting visitors to want to shop at your store.  It's probably the single most important thing you can do to market your website.

So when setting up your homepage remember...

#1 Priority - Make your homepage as informative and attractive as possible so when someone visits your site, they will want to explore further to see what you have to offer.

#2 Priority - Make your homepage search engine friendly with lots of linked text leading to your products.  BUT....The Search Engine Spiders are very sophisticated and they can tell if you're just listing/linking keywords for the sole purpose of 'spamming' them.  That's why the text you add must be written in a manner that makes it attractive to "real people".

HTH and if you have any questions, or need any help...just post here!

Edited to add:  NEVER, ever put links on your main homepage which take the spiders off your site.  As soon as a spider hits a link like this...they're gone.  They follow the links like breadcrumbs on a trail and you don't want that trail to lead them away from your site.

(exceptions are copyright/credits in the footer of your site...these are placed in the last place a spider hits and they generally open up into a new window, so they won't be deterimental.)

Morning All!
Thanks for the great information Joe & Crabby! This has got me thinking now (what a shock!) and I have several links on my homepage, but I also have a couple of links such as ones that go to two affiliate programs I belong to, but these take them offsite. So these should likely be on a secondary page??  Would it be a good idea where I have my store description:  Riverwood's carries blah, blah, blah to have each of those items linked directly to the category list?

Hey Shelley...I really like the way you have your homepage laid out.  It's very buyer friendly and I would only change a few things.

Go to this site:  Search Engine Spider Simulator and run your homepage URL thru it.

Then look down the list and you can see what order those affiliate links are showing up.  You can probably adjust that by moving them further down and/or to the right side.

Spiders read the page just like we do, Left to Right, Top to Bottom.

You definitely need to link your text to those categories.  Then that will be the 'breadcrumb trail' the spiders will follow first.   You also need to remove the reference to eBay on your homepage.  That's sending people back to eBay, which you definitely don't want to do especially since you aren't selling there anymore.   It's fine to leave it on your About Us page though.

Here is another good way to attract bots and spiders to your site:

Over the past 3 months or so I have noticed that the Google bot practically lives on my site. I have noticed that when a potential customer clicks on my site one of the bots or spiders sorta follows them in there and does some indexing. Sometimes this alone can result in a deep crawl. Because of this I developed the SEO game which can be found in the thread below:

http://www.thecrabbyhost....88.0.html;msg4708#msg4708

What this does is encourage people to attend your site which in turn will draw those very same bots and spiders in. The other benifit is you never know what you are going to find on someone elses site, something to buy or just a design idea you may want to try. This  game is not limited to just independent websites, sites like IWAC, eCRATER, eBay or any site with a store can participate.

One last benifit to the SEO game is the links within this forum are also indexed. So take a look and paricipate. Be sure to be #10 and post your site so you can see the results this game can provide in terms of organic search indexing and real traffic.

I am totally revising my home page on both my sites. Crabby are you talking about the links on top of your home page?

Alana

Hey Alana...

Actually I'm talking about the text on your homepage that describes what you sell.  Joe's NY Biker Gear site is a good example and so are my Candles and/or  Soaps sites.  The links aren't real obvious because of the color I made the font, but if you mouse over the text you will see that we took keyword phrases and linked them to product categories or searches.

Hopefully, the examples will explain it better than I did. If you're like me, I have to 'see' it usually before I get it.

Hope that helps somewhat!
