Hey all:

I have spent the better part of one + days trying to clean up a computer that was infected.  Needless to say, I was deleting any/all files and programs that were not needed.

Now - when I go to Start, Shut Down - it just keeps restarting.  Anybody got any ideas on what file/function I zapped and how to fix this?  It's annoying the heck outa me - and I'm not even sure where to start!

TIA !!!

PS  --   if I posted this in the wrong place.....sorry!!

Hey Erin...

I'm not sure, but I've had my computer do that before.  What I did was just killed the power to it completely (even unplugged it) and then when it restarted it fixed itself.

Don't know if that will help in your situation, but it might be worth a try.

Hi Erin -

Is the computer running Win XP? It might be that you need to turn off the hibernation mode. (You do that by going to START, then Control Panel, then Power Options, then Hibernate Tab, then uncheck 'Enable Hibernation'.)

It could be a program that is running in the background and isn't shutting off properly which could also be restarting the computer instead of shutting it down.

Hope this helps

Also Erin...

You need to check the APM settings in the Control Panel.  Same place suggested above, but click on Advanced.  It may have reset itself during the cleanup.

If that doesn't help, you might check here:  WINDOWS XP SHUTDOWN & RESTART TROUBLESHOOTING

I so appreciate the 2 ideas!  I've been cyber-shopping again, so will try both after I shut down about 15 windows....

You are trying to shut it down completely and it restarts instead?

Sounds like you may have removed or damaged a much need file for it to keep looping. Then again it could be overheating as it will do this is some certain instances when the CPU or memory overheats.

If the above don't work, you may want to try inserting your OS disc and repairing Windows. Sometimes it can be a simple dll that makes you want to bomb Bill Gates!!

Thanks Cherry Pits!!  Well.....I've done all recommended and also read and did a bit more - still looping...

I removed all kinds of 'stuff' that I no longer needed - I really was careful around any/all system files - but could have zapped something.  It doesn't seem to affect anything.

The other thing I did do was 'crack' the cage and install a wireless Network Adapter...but - I do not see how that would affect the shut down function.

If my parents had kept those 'darn disks', I'd be one happy camper!!!  Of all that I told them to keep, they do not have this - but they got every single piece of paper that came with the stupid system
